Depression is a disorder that is mainly related to mood and emotion. Emotions such as sad, tearful, hopeless, or empty feelings. But the symptoms of depression can also be explained by the other three types. The three types are cognitive, motivational, and physical symptoms. Especially, depression has a lot to do with cognitive issues.

However, these symptoms can be experienced in various and different forms in each individual.

1. Cognitive symptoms

  • Believe in themselves as useless or helpless due to low self-esteem. Likewise, obsessing about past failings or blaming themselves.
  • Have difficulty in concentrating, making judgments, and recalling information.
  • Have a pessimistic and gloomy outlook on the future as well as the world.

2. Motivational symptoms

  • Having trouble in starting anything. Moreover, engaging in activities that could bring pleasure or satisfaction.
  • Almost all everyday activities, including hobbies, sports, or sexual desire, can seem like they have no attraction or enjoyment.
  • In severe depression, the absence of motive leads to slowing of thought, speech, or movements which accompany extreme pain.

3. Physical symptoms

  • Insomnia or sleeping too much are examples of sleep problems.
  • Being tired and low energy state makes even simple tasks need extra effort.
  • Loss of appetite and weight reduction. But in mild depression, an increase in food cravings and weight gain occurs.

Depression symptom report of patients

Patients with major depression might not have mood-related usual depressed symptoms at first. In the case of patients visiting for the first time treatment, they mainly explain their symptoms as physical related. Symptoms such as exhaustion, headaches, stomach pains, or weight gain or loss. Difficulty in concentrating or becoming annoyed very easily are more likely to be reported by patients than depressed or sad emotion.

Recovery journey

When we have a physical illness and get treatment, the most important thing is to have physical strength and eat well to endure the treatment and recovery process.

Having difficulties related to mental health, mild or severe, can be similar to physical illness. Getting treatment or recovering from mental health issues need a lot of energy, just like physical illness.

Experiencing just one or two symptoms that were previously mentioned can be challenging and painful to anybody. And the recovery process itself can be challenging too. To sum up, anyone with a piece of chocolate or sip of water is making a great start to a recovery journey.
